Thomas Gainsborough, the catalog written by Dr. John Hayes, Director of the National Portrait Gallery and an acknowledged authority on Gainsborough, who selected and assembled the pictures for this exhibition held at the Tate Gallery, London,  from October 8th, 1980 to January 4th, 1981,  the first comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work to be held for nearly a hundred years. Published in 1980 by the Trustees with a Foreword by Tate Gallery Director Alan Bowness, it is an erudite academic text supported by fine black and white and full-color illustrations.
